This work is known as "Hikone Byobu" because it has been in the collection of the Ii family, the lords of the Hikone domain, for many years.

It is well known as a representative masterpiece of early modern genre paintings, with its depictions of male and female amusement, which are based on a koto-gi (a Japanese chess game) and sho-ga (a Japanese painting), incorporating shamisen (a three-stringed instrument), sugoroku (a traditional Japanese puppet), and love letters.
