*Reduced Screen Painting [National Treasure: Chinese Lions], By Kano Eitoku*. By Kano Eitoku, Azuchi-Momoyama period, Heian period (Lent by San-no-Maru Shokurakan, Imperial Household Agency) This is a reproduction of a reduced-size folding screen of a work by Kano Eitoku, one of the few surviving examples of his work. The bold brushwork depicts two Chinese lions, one male and one female, strolling majestically among the rocks. [The Chinese lions were presented by Hideyoshi to the Mori family to commemorate their peace treaty. It was presented by the Mori family during the Meiji period and designated as a National Treasure on September 30, 2021. Eitoku Kano Kano Eitoku (1543-1590) was a representative painter of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. A representative painter of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. He was highly valued by the powerful of the time, including Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and directed all the paintings on the walls of such representative buildings of the period as Azuchi Castle, Momoyama Castle, and Juraku-dai (Juraku Dynasty). His works were lost in the war, and there are only a few of his paintings left. His representative works are [the wall paintings of Juko-in Temple, a national treasure], [the screens of Rakuchu-Rakugai-zu, a national treasure], and [the screens of Karazishi-zu (Chinese lions), a national treasure]. |

狩野永徳 安土桃山時代 宮内庁三の丸尚蔵館蔵
現存する作品が少ない狩野永徳の作品を縮小屏風で再現しました。雌雄二頭の唐獅子が、威風堂々と岩間をのし歩く姿を大胆な筆致で描いています。「唐獅子図屏風」は、秀吉が毛利との講和の記念に贈った陣屋屏風でした。明治期に毛利家より献上され、2021年9月30日付けで国宝に指定されました。
狩野永徳(かのう えいとく)
天文12〜天正18年(1543〜1590)。安土桃山時代を代表する画家。織田信長・豊臣秀吉ら時の権力者に重用され、安土城・桃山城・聚楽第など、当代を代表する建造物の障壁画を全て指導した。戦乱で失われたため障壁画の遺作は少ない。代表作は『国宝 聚光院障壁画』『国宝 洛中洛外図屏風』『御物 唐獅子図屏風』。
