Description
*Reduced folding screen [National Treasure, Scenes in and around Kyoto, Funaki version]* Edo period, Tokyo National Museum This is one of the "Scenes in and around Kyoto" paintings depicting the city and suburbs of Kyoto, and is known as the Funaki version, as it was originally handed down to the Funaki family in Shiga. The composition of the painting is such that the Great Buddha Hall of Hokoji Temple, the symbol of the Toyotomi clan, is on the far right and the Nijo Castle of the Tokugawa clan on the far left, facing each other. The artist is believed to be Iwasa Matabee, and the scenery suggests that the painting was created around the first year of the Genna Era (1615). |
