Uemura Shoen

Born in Kyoto between 1875 and 1949. She was a leading beauty painter in the Kyoto art world. In 1948, she became the first woman to be awarded the Order of Cultural Merit. She was the first woman to receive the Order of Cultural Merit in 1948, and her son Uemura Shoko and grandson Uemura Atsuyuki have been Japanese-style painters for three generations.
