Born in Edo (present-day Tokyo) between 1797 and 1861, Kuniyoshi Utagawa made his debut in the art world at the age of 14, and was active in a wide range of genres, including landscapes, paintings of beautiful women, paintings of actors, paintings of flowers and birds, and paintings of warriors. He was a man of frankness and open-mindedness, and left behind many anecdotes. He was also active as a caricaturist. His representative works are [Famous Places in the Eastern Capital] and [Thirty-two Scenes from the Modern Era].
