バルトークの作曲と民謡研究のダイナミックな相互作用を，両者の界面にあたる民謡編曲に焦点をあてながら内在的に理解することによって，作品のより深い理解を目指す.本書では全ての編曲について，オリジナル民謡と編曲手法により整理を行い，得られた全体像について論述．さらに一つの到達点である≪44の二重奏曲≫の成立史を辿ることにより，バルトークの民俗音楽編曲の思考法について，より深い分析と考察を加える．
