Description
By Shota Okano (Shota Ip) What kind of people are [Taiwanese Overseas Chinese] - are they [Taiwanese] or [Republic of China]? This book rethinks the study of overseas Chinese living in Japan from the perspective of the adventure of tracing their identities. After World War II, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China claimed each other as the legitimate government. A fierce battle was waged over which overseas Chinese living abroad should be considered "nationals" of which country. Taiwanese people living in Japan and mainlanders associated with the R.O.C. who relocated to Taiwan = [Taiwanese overseas Chinese] were forced to make a political choice between [supporting the R.O.C.], [supporting the People's Republic of China], and [supporting Taiwan independence] due to the reorganization of the postwar East Asian regional order, and were asked to identify themselves under various categorizations and labels. The question of self-identification has been raised under various categorizations and labels. This project will reconsider the existence of overseas Chinese of Taiwanese descent, which has not been clearly positioned in studies of overseas Chinese in Japan, under the historical transition, and reconsider the relationship between the history of boundaries drawn on maps and the designations and self-identification based on these boundaries. |
