A History of Immigration by Immigrants: How Japanese-Brazilian Immigrants Narrated Their Own Living History

This book traces the artistic activities and thoughts of Tomoo Handa (1906-1996), a painter and immigrant intellectual who came to Brazil as a child immigrant and spent a lifetime thinking about and expressing the Brazilian Nikkei community.

By drawing on a wealth of previously unreferenced primary sources, this project aims to trace how the historical phenomenon of "immigration" has been discussed in Japanese-Brazilian society, and by focusing on Handa, to capture the image of an immigrant intellectual and to open up new avenues for research on the history of Japanese-Brazilian immigration.

Migrants themselves faced their own existence and history much earlier than immigration scholars began to think. By examining the processes and discourses through which immigrants thought about and described their immigration, the aim of this book is to present a history of immigration lived by the immigrants themselves and to contribute to the updating of the narrative of Japanese-Brazilian immigration history.
