Kontaraeruha is mentioned in a Dutch medical book from the late Edo period. The story of the true symbiosis between people and plants, which has been traversed over 500 years from the 15th century to the present day, and over a vast space connecting Europe, America, and Asia, is described in this book. The name "kontara elha" comes from the Spanish word [contra yerba]. Contra is [(poison) disabling] and yerba is [grass]. In other words, [contra elba] was a [poison-disabling herb]. The traces of this now-defunct herb reveal the appearance and disappearance of several plants with the same name, highlighting the resourcefulness of the plant as a [commodity] traded worldwide as a spice and medicine.
