*Kashmir and paper mache products

Kashmiri traditional paper mache products are made by tearing paper into small pieces, gluing them together, and decorating them with beautiful decorations by artisans.

The history of paper mash dates back to around the 15th century. It is said that it was made by a Kashmiri prince who was imprisoned in Samarkand at that time and returned to Kashmir.

*Painting technique cultivated by history

Kashmir boasted high-quality papermaking technology at that time. As the paper industry developed, the demand for pen cases increased along with the demand for pens, both to draw the covers of bound books and because Persian calligraphy was flourishing in the region.

As a result, paper-mache pen cases with beautiful paintings began to be made in Kashmir. During the Mughal Empire, they were widely used for decorating elephant baskets, room walls, and ceilings.

In Kashmir, where such traditions are still alive, artisans hand-paint tableware such as cups and curry plates.

The design motifs include flowers, chintz patterns, and arabesques, and are strongly influenced by Persia. Birds and fish are also depicted, but basically no humans are depicted. Kashmir's majestic mountains and beautiful lakes. They are works of art nurtured in the rich nature that surrounds them.
