Kuniyoshi Utagawa
November 15, 1798 (January 1, 1798) - March 5, 1861 (April 14, 1861))
Ukiyoe artist of the late Edo period.
He was called Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi from the beginning of Bunsei Era to the first year of Man'en Era. Later he was also called Saiyosha (mid-Bunsei Era), Asakuraro (early Tempo Era to the first year of Man'en Era), Sesshokuya, and Senma. He was also known as Sesshin. He called himself "Utagawa," and his pen name was "Ryuen" (meaning "a poet's poet"). He was one of the leading ukiyoe artists of the late Edo period, and his abundance of imaginative ideas, novel designs, outlandish ideas, and assured drawing skills produced many works with a broad appeal that extended beyond the boundaries of ukiyoe.
