It is said that these cloths originated when female factory workers at a mosquito net factory, feeling it was a waste to discard defective fabric or scraps left over from cutting, began sewing several pieces together to make them for their own use. At first, the fabric is stiff and taut due to the starch, but once you remove the starch with lukewarm water or plain water, it will shrink surprisingly much. As a result, it becomes soft, fluffy, and supple to the touch. It also has excellent water absorption (1.3 times that of cotton), dries quickly, and is durable. It has a variety of uses, such as hand towels, draining vegetables, and wiping dishes. Once it becomes worn out, it can be repurposed as a kitchen cloth or cleaning rag. 日本で唯一残っている蚊帳(かや)産地奈良県で時間をかけて丁寧に織られた蚊帳生地の布巾に、和歌山県で刺繍やプリントを施した「かや生地ふきん」。
蚊帳を作る工場の女工さんたちが、不良生地や裁断の残りの余り生地をもったいないと何枚か合わせて縫製し、自分たちのために作り始めた事が誕生のきっかけといわれています。
最初は糊がついている為、硬くピンと張った状態ですが、ぬるま湯またはお水で糊を落としていただきますと驚くほど収縮します。
その分、柔らかくふんわり、そして、しなやかな風合いになります。吸水性も抜群(綿の1.3倍)で、乾きも早い、そして丈夫です。
お手拭きや、野菜の水切り、食器拭きなど使い方色々。
