桑名は東海道五十三次の42番目の宿場町。伊勢の国の東玄関として尾張から海上七里を船で渡る「七里の渡し」を中心に、伊勢神宮へ参拝する人々で賑わいを見せておりました。
尾芭蕉の高弟 各務支考が、「時雨蛤」(しぐれはまぐり)と名付けたと言われています。また、騒ぎ唄(広く宴会でうたう歌)の「桑名の殿様」で「桑名の殿様、時雨で茶茶漬け・・♪」と歌われて有名です。
