Description
From Niigata! A photo collection of good old Japanese culture is now available! Niigata Prefecture is known for its fresh seafood, delicious local sake, snowy townscapes, ski resorts, and hot springs. This book presents the culture and crafts that Niigata is proud of, along with beautiful photographs! This book introduces four types of crafts: sasa-dango (bamboo dumplings), textiles (Shiozawa pongee, a national traditional craft*), dyed goods, and Japanese paper (Oguni-gami, an intangible cultural asset*). All of them are traditional industries with a long history that have passed down traditional techniques to the present day. In this book, "Niigata Komachi" dressed in antique kimonos recreate and photograph the production process of these crafts in as old-fashioned a manner as possible. The book is a fun way to learn about the history of traditional craftsmanship while enjoying the seasons and stories that change from chapter to chapter. Comment from the Publisher This book was planned and photographed by a photographer in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. The models, hair and makeup artists, and photography staff all live in Niigata Prefecture. In addition, the cover of the book has a wonderful title by Saisui Shimoda, a calligrapher who is active in Niigata. We hope you will enjoy this photo book, which is a concentrated collection of the power of Niigata, from Niigata. About the Author Heeko Hachikyuichi Lives in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. A family photo taken when she was in her 30s made her realize the power and potential of photography, and she started taking photos with a camera herself. While facing a variety of subjects, he came into contact with ancient Japanese culture and traditions through the production of this book, and came to believe that he would like to preserve the traditions of the region for the future. [As a "photographer who connects the past with the future," he plans to expand his activities throughout Japan. |
