By Tsunetaka Miyoshi
From Howard's Rural Urbanism to New Towns People's lives and community development do not end with a single generation; they need to survive while transforming themselves to meet the needs of the times. The germ of this transformation should be found in the small attempts and small murmurs made in the field toward the revitalization of life in Old Newtown. (from the text) The author, who has been involved in the planning*design*research of new towns since around 1975, discusses the [Old New Town problem] with his actual experiences in the field. The history of new towns from the origin of the ideal city, which is the root of modern new towns, to the history of new towns after World War II is reviewed, considering it as the result of the planners and designers' struggle with the themes of the times. The report also made concrete proposals regarding the importance of the public sector in a society with a declining population and a super-aging population. In addition, as a measure to cope with the sprawl caused by the concentration of population in postwar metropolitan areas, we typified seemingly similar new towns in Japan, which were built mainly in the suburbs of metropolitan areas. The challenge to revitalize people's lives in [Akamai Danchi] (Akashi Maiko Danchi) in Hyogo Prefecture, which was developed in the early stage of postwar Japan's new town projects (at about the same time as Senri New Town), is presented as a case study. |
