Description
NY-based photographer* Yojiro Imasaka. FENDI's Omotesando Street Art Project Imasaka's collaboration with FENDI's Omotesando Street Art Project has also become a topic of conversation. published in Japanese-English bilingual edition for the first time in Japan! The unspoiled landscape at the mouth of the Mississippi River in the southern U.S. The book features delicate, analog landscape photographs of the pristine natural beauty of the Mississippi River estuary in the southern United States. Forget the concept of time and immerse yourself in the landscape before your eyes. This is a collection of works with such a mysterious charm. Imasaka's photographic style begins with researching the locations that inspire him and choosing the best photographic method for each location. Once in the location, he continues to observe the changes in light over a long period of time to formulate an image in his mind of the landscape he wishes to capture. The result is a series of detailed work that gives Imasaka's work its characteristic "delicate, landscape-painting-like" quality. This book contains 76 photographs of the landscape of the swampy area known as the "bayou" at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Imasaka's photographic technique of choice is the collodion wet plate method, a classic technique used at the end of the 19th century, before the invention of film. A large 8 x 10 camera is set with a glass plate about 1 mm thick in place of film, and the image is burned onto the glass through long exposures. The result is a unique landscape that transcends both time and space. Imasaka's landscape photography works also reflect the local culture in the background. The French Canadian immigrants who once settled in this region created the Cajun culture along with the natives. [In the [Wet Land] series, Imasaka toned the final prints with onions, an essential ingredient in the Cajun diet. These flexible ideas also make his work more multilayered. The exhibition also includes an essay by Catherine Carey Galitz, an art historian specializing in 19th century Western painting and a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; an interview with Imasaka by Yasufumi Nakamori, former senior curator of photography at the Tate Modern and current director of the Asia Society; and a commentary by Imasaka himself. Included is an interview with Imasaka, as well as an explanation of the photographic process by Imasaka himself.
