| *[Nenga postcards from Convenience Store] Toys from the 8th collection of Chikusa, Kawasaki Kioizumi B-107*. How about a New Year's greeting card featuring a long-loved work of art? From among the many masterpieces from all ages and cultures, our store staff of art lovers have voted and selected the most popular works. Kawasaki Kyosen (1877-1942), born in Sakai, Osaka. His real name was Sueyoshi, and "Kyoisen" was his stage name. He is famous for his paintings of toys. In 1892 (Meiji 25), he was apprenticed to Nakai Yoshitaki, a leading Kamigata genre painter who lived in Sakai at the time, and became his son-in-law and successor, taking over his master's work in newspaper and magazine illustrations, printed genre paintings ([Osaka Meisho]), and other works. He not only left sketches, but also organized a local toy study group and published magazines such as "Mermaid" in pursuit of the folkloric value of local toys.
