*Art Seal [Birds and beasts in an abbreviated painting style]* Keisai Huwagata, Edo period, dated 1797 Lent by The Metropolitan Museum of Art A new addition to the Japanese Art Art Sticker Series is the cute Ukiyo-e masterpiece [Birds and beasts in abbreviated form]! These art stickers feature a mixture of loosely drawn tigers, elephants, cats, and birds. The Japanese paper-like stickers are decorated with gold foil and glitter with rich texture. Masayoshi Kitao (Keisai Kuwagata) Kitao Masayoshi (1764-1824) was born in Edo, the son of a tatami mat maker. He was an ukiyoe artist active at the same time as Katsushika Hokusai and others, and developed a unique style called shorthand, in which the subject matter is expressed in simple, simplified strokes. He created a unique style called "shakubutsu" (simplified drawing style), in which he used simple, simplified lines to depict the subject matter. His representative works include "Birds and Animals in Abbreviated Style" and "Edo Ichimokuzu. |
