Description
| Edited by Shoko Haseyama Edited and written by Setsuya Hashizume [Dynamism in a Quiet Painting: The World of Bongsan Matsumoto, a Distinctive Suiboku Painter A special exhibition of the Osaka University Museum of Arts and Sciences commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bongsan Matsumoto (1925-2010), a female ink painting artist born in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, who painted her own unique world in ink painting, is being held at the museum ( The catalogue of the special exhibition [Matsumoto Bokuzan: Painting the World in Suiboku-ga] ( 2025.04.26 - 2025.06.28) at the Osaka University Museum of Arts. After moving to Kobe, Matsumoto Bokuzan became an apprentice of ink and wash painter* Matsumoto Shozan at the age of 16, and began his career in painting. In 1963, at the age of 37, he made his first visit to the U.S., where he opened up a new frontier in painting. The urban landscape blending with nature and people living freely among skyscrapers - the scenery he saw in the U.S. greatly inspired him, and his talent blossomed at once. His painting style shifted from blackened, detailed depictions to a lighter, simplified style in his later years. His paintings, which Bongsan himself called "quiet paintings," have a sharpened spirit and a certain strength. After his first visit to the U.S., he traveled to Australia, New Zealand, European countries, Brazil, Turkey, etc., painting local landscapes and giving demonstrations to local people to spread the new ink painting style. At the same time, he was fascinated by the serene scenery of Lake Biwa, Kamakura, the Imperial Palace, the Shimanto River, and the Seto Inland Sea in his hometown, and published a series of works in newspapers and other media. Although Bongsan was active internationally, his work is known only to a few, as he did not belong to any large art organizations and did not exhibit in group shows, in accordance with his teacher's wishes. The book is profusely illustrated and includes numerous essays and columns by experts from inside and outside the museum. By examining Bongsan from a variety of perspectives, this book reexamines his position in art history. |
