Description
| Why have women artists, who represented a new era, disappeared from history? This is the catalogue and book of an exhibition that reviews the creations of Japanese women artists from the 1950s to the 1960s from the keyword "anti-*action. At that time, for a short period of time, women artists in Japan attracted a great deal of attention in the field of avant-garde art. This was encouraged by the influx of the abstract art movement [unformel] from abroad and the critical language that responded to it. However, when the stylistic concept of "action*painting" was introduced next, women painters were effectively excluded from criticism. Male critics responded to the concept of action, which is closely associated with masculinity, such as boldness and power, and a reversal of the traditional gender order occurred. This book features approximately 120 works by 14 artists, including Yayoi Kusama, Atsuko Tanaka, and Hideko Fukushima, using the gender studies perspective of [Anti-*Action] (Izumi Nakajima [academic collaborator on this exhibition], 2019) as a springboard. It also includes an [anti-*action] timeline, an interview with Griselda Pollock, a pioneer in feminist art history, and in-depth discussions of critiques, materials, and the gender balance of exhibitions that have been held in Japan. The exhibition introduces the trajectory of [their] unique challenges and their reflections, responding in a different way to the era of [action]. Exhibiting artists (in alphabetical order): Keiko Akaana, Akuto Akuta Keiko Akaana, Saori Akutagawa, Kazuko Enomoto, Kinuko Emi, Yayoi Kusama, Fujiko Shiraga, Minami Tada, Atsuko Tanaka, Tanaka Tazuko, Mitsuko Tabe, Hideko Fukushima, Aiko Miyawaki, Mami Mori, Tsuruko Yamazaki |
