クリソプレーズは「アップルグリーン」と呼ばれる、青リンゴのような美しい緑色をしたカルセドニー（玉髄）のこと。
産出量がとても少なく、そのためカルセドニーグループの石の中で最も価値が高い石とされています。
珪酸溶液中にニッケルを含む鉱物が混入し、コロイド状になって固まってできるといわれています。いわば石のゼリー。クリソプレーズのぷるんとした艶やかな質感などにも、その性質が表れているといえるでしょう。
