Description
| In recent years, Korea's contemporary art scene has been rapidly developing and increasing its presence on the international stage. This is due to the development of cultural policies and the spread of new expressions and alternative* spaces by the new generation that accompanied the country's democratization and entry into the international community during the 1980s and 1990s. This was followed by the establishment of a cultural infrastructure, the successful overseas expansion of Korean culture, and a booming art market, and Korea has developed into a cultural nexus in the Asian region. These trends have brought new perspectives to the environment for artists and art players. This special issue aims to carefully explore the reality of the scene and illuminate its rich development by listening to the practices of artists and key players working on the frontlines. In addition, we will examine the impact of the political*cultural context of current Korean society on art by unpacking elements found in the artists' expressions, such as technology, gender and physicality, and social critique. In 2025, the year that marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea, we would like to look at regional and international perspectives, including Japan, from the perspective of contemporary art in South Korea. |
