Herkimer diamonds grow in cavities in the matrix of dolomite, a hard rock, where a portion of the column surface is in contact. It is said to have been formed 450 to 500 million years ago. 透明度が高く、ダイヤモンドのような硬質な輝きを持つ為、このような名前がつけられました。
普通の水晶より高温・高圧下で形成されるので、カーボン（黒色の炭）や、気泡を内包する結晶が多く、
双晶（2つの結晶がくっついたもの）や、群晶になりやすいという特長を持ちます。
ハーキマーダイヤモンドは、ドロマイト（苦灰岩）という硬い岩石の母岩の中にできた空洞部分に、柱面の一部分が接触して成長しています。その形成は、4億5000年から5億年前と言われています。
ハーキマーダイヤモンドは、「ドリームクリスタル」とも呼ばれていて、夢を叶えてくれるお守りと言われています。
