In Kabuki, this is a form of makeup that uses lines and colors painted on the face to emphasize a character’s role, personality, and emotions. Lines in colors such as red and blue are drawn with a brush onto a white-painted face and then blended with the fingers to highlight muscles and blood vessels. The word [kuma] refers to the boundaries between light and dark shades and shadows; from this, the expression [kumatori]—meaning “to create shadows with color”—was coined, eventually becoming the noun [kumatori].
It is said to have originated in the Edo period when the first-generation Ichikawa Danjūrō, drawing inspiration from Bunraku puppet theater, began using vermilion and black ink to create a bold style of makeup. It subsequently developed as a form of expression well-suited to the Ichikawa family’s “Aragoto” style and has now reached near-perfection as a contemporary art form.

Red: Justice, youth, strength, intense anger, heroic figures
Blue: Ruthlessness, evil, rebellion, vengeful spirits, and other villains
Brown: Yokai, ogres, monsters disguised as humans
Black: Emphasis on eyebrows and beards; the air of a military commander and dignity
White: Used for a white-based complexion and to convey a supernatural or ghostly impression
