*The Mischievous Krishna of Childhood

While Krishna is best known for playing the flute, numerous myths have been passed down about him from his various stages of life. As a child, Krishna was a mischievous little boy who would secretly steal and eat butter while his mother, *Yashoda, was away.

In this statue, too, he is seen crawling while clutching a butter pot, licking it with relish. This depiction of the young Krishna, symbolizing the innocence, purity, and nobility of a child, is specifically known as Bala*Krishna.

When Krishna was caught stealing the butter and scolded by his mother, he opened his mouth and burst into tears. Then, to everyone’s astonishment, the entire world* and the entire universe—which are contained within Krishna’s body—became visible inside his mouth. It is said that his mother, Yashoda, was astonished by this and realized that Krishna is a being who transcends and protects all things.

*The Enchanting God of the Flute

Lord Krishna is known for his handsome appearance, featuring a slender build, blue skin, and striking long eyelashes. Though a young cowherd, he possessed miraculous divine powers; the sound of his flute was so enchanting that everyone—men and women, young and old, animals, and even plants—would lose themselves in its spell.

There are stories from Krishna’s youth that reveal his free-spirited and playboy-like side, such as when he secretly hid the saris of women bathing in the forest. On the other hand, he is also known for a story that showcases his compassion and strength: to protect the villagers from a flood caused by heavy rain, he uprooted a mountain, lifted it up, and used it as an umbrella.
