Description
| Kyoto-yaki* and Kiyomizu-yaki, two of Kyoto’s most representative traditional crafts, occupy a uniquely distinctive place among Japan’s many types of pottery. While they are so diverse that, at first glance, one might not believe they originated from the same region, they are all underpinned by a refined aesthetic sensibility and exceptional craftsmanship. Some pieces feature intricate painting applied to every corner; others evoke the grandeur of nature through bold layers of glaze; still others spark the imagination with unexpected patterns and color combinations. To meet the diverse demands of Kyoto’s discerning townspeople, chefs, and tea masters, Kyoto’s artisans have poured their skills and wisdom into creating a wealth of ceramics with truly rich and varied expressions. At the same time, they have established a unique production process involving multiple stages, with pieces passing back and forth between the kiln numerous times until completion.
