フェナカイトは1883年にロシア、ウラル地方のエメラルド鉱山から発見されました。
産出量が少ない鉱物で、無色、黄色、ピンク、淡色などに発色し、ガラス光沢を持ちます。
限られた条件下でしか生成されない透明度の高い結晶は非常に貴重で高価でとても高いバイブレーションを放つ石なので、アクセサリーの他にも原石やタンブルで用いられます。
鉱物名は結晶が水晶やトパーズに非常に似ているため、ギリシャ語で「騙す、欺く」を意味する言葉から名付けられました。
