諸説ありますが「覚えやすいように身近な動物を当てはめた」といわれ「神様が、1月1日に神様の元へどれだけ早く集まれるか動物たちにレースをさせ、レースに基づいて、十二支の種類と順番が決定された」という話が有名です。
