Description
| A timeless masterpiece in the history of photography—a miraculous reprint! Photographer* Masafumi Sunae’s first photo book, *Alive*, was published in April 1997. Neither “decisive moments” nor “personal photography,” this collection of images—unlike anything anyone had ever seen—generated a huge response and introduced the world to a new talent. The impact resonated with the next generation of photographers, giving rise to a new trend in photography, and is remembered as an epoch-making event in the history of photography. [Alive] went through several printings afterward, but reprints became impossible because the paper used for the main text of the book was discontinued. The 2007 reprint was the last, and the book is now impossible to obtain. Amidst this, Seigensha celebrated its 30th anniversary in October 2025. To mark this 30th anniversary, a special project was launched as part of the commemorative year’s initiatives to reprint books that are no longer available, and the publisher began soliciting requests from readers. As a result, numerous requests were received calling for the reprint of [Alive], and the decision was made to reprint it. For the reprint, under the supervision of book designer Satoru Machiguchi—who originally designed *I Am Alive*—the project moved forward after conducting repeated printing tests to select a new paper stock for the text, finally settling on a paper that serves as a suitable replacement for the original. For the printing, we adhered strictly to the methods used at the time, using photomastics to create the plates and printing with oil-based ink. As for the binding, we updated the cover design, resulting in a fresh, modern finish befitting this reissue. Twenty-nine years after its initial publication, a new page is added to the history of photography. *Includes a mini-poster featuring the cover photograph from the original edition (same size as the book; enclosed in a clear bag along with the book) |
