Country of manufacture: Produced in Fukui Prefecture
Material / component: Betsuhata Stone
|
Description
| *What is [Betsubata Stone]? Place of Origin: Betsubata-cho, Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture The history of Fukui Prefecture dates back to around the latter half of the 7th century, when [Wakasa Province] was established following the introduction of the Ritsuryō system; by the end of the 7th century, the name had changed to [Echizen Province]. Betsubata Stone, quarried in Fukui Prefecture, is a type of tuff. Before quarrying, it has a pale green color, but over time it changes to a brownish hue—a mineral that embodies the aesthetic of wabi-sabi. It is a soft stone used in building materials and stone walls, much like “Fukui Blue,” and it also possesses excellent fire resistance. It is a very obscure stone with limited information available; as a result, it has been little studied and remains largely unknown. It is well known that dinosaur fossils have been excavated in Fukui Prefecture, which attests to the region’s ancient geological history when it was connected to the mainland. Mining is scheduled to end in 2024, making it one of the rare stones facing extinction. [About Stone Club] We are [Stone Club], a natural stone wholesaler with a physical store in Hakurōchō, Osaka.
