Description
| *What is [Chokai Stone]? Mount Chokai, the source of this stone, lies on the border between Yamagata and Akita Prefectures and is also known as Dewa Fuji. It marked the northernmost frontier under the Yamato regime; it is said to be the seat of the deity Omonoi-no-Kami and also home to Tenaga-Ashinaga, a divine immortal of Chinese origin. Tenaga-Ashinaga are a pair of brother yokai—one with long arms and the other with long legs. While there are shrines that enshrine them as gods of eternal youth and longevity, they are also said to attack people. Legend has it that when the three-legged bird (Yatagarasu) spots them, it warns the people. Renowned ukiyo-e artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi have depicted them, and Sei Shōnagon wrote in *The Pillow Book* that [a painting of Tenaga-Ashinaga was displayed in the Seiryōden]. This stone contains quartz and feldspar, and is fascinating to observe under a microscope. 産地の鳥海山は山形県と秋田県の県境にあり、出羽富士とも呼ばれます。
大和政権下の北端であり、大物忌神(オオモノイミノカミ)が鎮座され、中国伝来の神仙である手長足長(テナガアシナガ)も住んでいるとされています。
手長足長は、一人は手が長く、一人は足が長いという兄弟の妖怪で、不老長寿の神として祀る神社がある反面、人を襲うともいわれ、三本足の鳥(ヤタガラス)が彼らを見つけると人々に警告して教えてくれるという伝説があります。
歌川国芳など名だたる浮世絵師が描き、清少納言は「清涼殿に手長足長の絵が飾られていた」と枕草子に記述しています。
石英や長石が含まれ、顕微鏡で観察するととても面白い石です。
