| *What is a [Karst Stalactite]? A karst plateau stretches along the border between Ehime and Kochi Prefectures. Karst refers to limestone terrain where rainwater dissolves the limestone, creating cavities that form limestone caves. Ehime Prefecture is home to a cave system that stretches an impressive 500 meters in length. This limestone terrain is said to have originated from ancient coral reefs that existed in southern Ehime Prefecture and Kochi Prefecture when those regions were still near the equator; rather than fossilizing, these reefs left behind only the limestone. The fossilized remains of these reefs are known as Tosa-zakura. It is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Caves and is currently designated as a Natural Monument of Ehime Prefecture, meaning raw stone cannot be extracted from the site. カルストとは石灰質の土地で、大地に降り注いだ雨により石灰岩が溶けて空間となり鍾乳洞となります。
愛媛県には500mもの非常に長距離の洞穴があります。
この石灰質の大地は、愛媛県南部から高知県がまだ赤道付近にあったころの古代サンゴ礁が化石とならずに石灰質だけを残したものといわれています。
それが化石化したものが土佐桜です。
日本百名洞の一つとなり、現在では愛媛県天然記念物に指定されており、原石の採取はできないものとなっております。
