In the Hidaka region of Hokkaido, red stone, blue stone, and Hidaka jade are mined. Among these, it is sometimes possible to find highly transparent siliceous rocks. These are a type of fossil formed from the accumulation of radiolarians; mineralogically, they are classified not as jadeite but as a type of chert (cryptocrystalline quartz). These minerals were formed when radiolarian shells deposited in the deep sea during the Cretaceous or Paleogene periods (approximately 100 million to 50 million years ago) were later compacted* and metamorphosed due to tectonic activity. With its beautiful color and transparency, the raw stone is sometimes polished for decorative purposes; however, since it is found deep in the mountains and mining is difficult, the supply is limited. ◇「日高青晶石（ひだか せいしょうせき）」とは?
北海道の日高では赤石や青石や日高翡翠などが産出されます。その中でも珪質岩で透明度の高いものを見つけられる事があります。それらは放散虫が堆積した化石の一種で、鉱物的には碧玉ではなくチャートの仲間とされています（隠微晶質石/cryptocrystalline quartz）。
白亜紀?古第三紀（約1億年前?5000万年前）に深海で放散虫の殻が、後に地殻変動で圧密・変成して生まれた鉱物です。色目や透明度が美しく原石を磨いて飾られることがありますが、産地が山奥で採掘が容易ではなく流通量は限定的です。
