| *What is the “Akarihime Stone”? According to the *Kojiki*, the prince of Silla, Ame-no-Hiboko, fell in love with the goddess Akarihime-no-Kami, who is said to have been born from a red gemstone. Their happiness was short-lived, however; growing increasingly arrogant, the prince eventually lost her favor, and Akaruhime-no-Kami finally fled to Japan in a small boat... This legend is still preserved in Oita. This stone contains components of rhyolitic obsidian formed by volcanic activity; those from Himejima, in particular, are milky white and were used as arrowheads in Paleolithic Japan as early as 20,000 years ago. Since arrowheads from this region have been discovered as far away as Osaka, it is believed that the area covered a wide territory even back then. 古事記によると、赤い玉石から生まれたとされる阿加流比売神 (あかるひめのかみ)に、新羅の王子 天之日矛 (あめのひぼこ) が恋をします。
幸せだったのも束の間で、どんどん横柄になっていく王子に愛想を尽かし、とうとう阿加流比売神は小舟を漕いで日本へ逃げてしまいました...。
そのような伝説が大分に残っています。
火山活動により生まれた流紋岩質の黒曜石の成分が含まれる石で、 特に姫島産のものは乳白色をしており、 旧石器時代の日本では2万年前から矢じりとして使用されていました。
遠くは大阪まで、この地の矢じりが発見されているため、 広い広域を当時から持っていたとされています。
姫島産のものは現在採取禁止です。
