| *What is [Izumo Stone]? It is a stone from [the Land of Izumo], the homeland of Okuninushi-no-Mikoto—a figure indispensable to the creation of Japan and Japanese mythology. In Japan, Okuninushi-no-Mikoto is identified with Daikoku-sama. Izumo Taisha, which appears in the *Kojiki*, is said to have towered so high it reached the heavens; modern research suggests it stood as tall as 48 meters. One of the mysteries of ancient Japanese history is the belief that Izumo once had an independent government. This stone, found in Kimachi, Shinjō Town, Shimane Prefecture, is a tuffaceous sandstone formed 14 million years ago. During the Edo period, the Matsue Domain prohibited its removal from the domain, and it is a historically significant stone used in the construction of Matsue Castle. It has a bluish-white gray color, but it is a mysterious stone that turns yellow over time. It often contains fossils.
