| *What is [Himekawa Yakuseki]? It is a type of igneous rock quarried along the coast of Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture. Historically known as [Toraishi] in traditional Chinese medicine, it has a long history of being used for therapeutic purposes. Locally, there is a folk belief that holding Himekawa Yakuseki is beneficial when one is feeling unwell. Because it contains trace amounts of radioactive elements such as radium and thorium, it emits radioactive noble gases like radon and thoron. It is believed to have a hormetic effect (an adaptive response that builds resistance to specific substances), which is thought to help boost the immune system.
