Formed from Mesozoic Cretaceous geology, Kitagi Stone is a type of granite that is highly valued and regarded as a premium Japanese stone. The island is believed to have been inhabited since the Kofun period and is considered one of the strongholds of the Manabe clan, a military family that participated in the Genpei War. It is famous for having been used in the stone walls of Osaka Castle and in the Bank of Japan’s main building. Kitagi Stone comes in red and blue varieties; the red variety is believed to be more oxidized because it is extracted from geological layers closer to the surface.
