*What is [Ako Stone (AKO Stone)]?

Back when the Japanese archipelago was not yet in its current position and was still connected to the Eurasian continent.

82 million years ago, a volcano in Ako erupted, forming a caldera.

As time passed and weathering occurred, the caldera disappeared, leaving behind what is known as a “cauldron.”

The cauldron covers a vast area, measuring 21 km east to west and 16 km north to south, extending west to Okayama Prefecture and east to Tatsuno City.

This caldera contains layers of welded tuff and plutonic rock.

Welded tuff is a volcanic rock, and while plutonic rock is also originally igneous, research by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has revealed that because their formation processes differ, Ako was originally a volcano.

Therefore, the stones found here consist of mixed components.

Atago Shrine, located at the “demon gate” (the inauspicious direction) of Ako Castle, was built atop this caldera. Ako Castle was the seat of the Asano clan and is famous for the Ako Ronin.

Atago Shrine is dedicated to the god of fire, and Atago Daigongen is a god of war originating from the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism.

We cannot know today whether it was a coincidence that the god of fire was enshrined here at a time when it was not yet known that this area was once a volcano.
