| *What is [Niigata Yamasakura Stone]? Niigata Yamasakura Stone refers to Niigata chert that displays the beautiful patterns characteristic of sedimentary rock. Chert is a type of rock formed from the fossilized remains of radiolarians and sponges that settled on the seafloor. If you examine a cross-section with a magnifying glass, you may even see fragments of these fossils. Since it can only form under specific conditions—where no other materials are mixed in with the seafloor deposits—and the environment must meet certain criteria, its sources are limited. Niigata Chert consists of Triassic-era sediments. The stone itself is extremely hard, and because it is layered, it becomes sharp when broken. 新潟チャートに堆積岩特有の模様が美しく出ているものを新潟山桜石と呼びます。
チャートとは放散虫や海綿動物が海底に堆積した化石の一種です。
断面をルーペで見ると、その化石の断片が見られることもあります。
海底に他の物などが混ざらない条件でなければ形成されず、環境が一定条件に整わなければならないため、産地は限られます。
新潟チャートは三畳紀の堆積物です。
石自体は非常に硬く、層状になっているため、割れると鋭利になります。
色とりどりなうえ、光を透過するので、見た目もとても美しいです。
