| *What is [Yamagata Agate]? In Yamagata, the Dewa Sanzan mountains have been the focus of mountain worship since ancient times. Yamagata’s chalcedony and agate are mined across a wide area of the Dewa Sanzan Asahi Mountain Range—including Mt. Gassan—where stones with a variety of appearances are found. Generally, transparent varieties are called chalcedony, while those with banded patterns are called agate; however, their crystal structures and chemical compositions are identical. This region is majestically and gracefully enveloped by the grandeur of nature, featuring the clear waters of the Sagae River and the Bandai-Asahi National Park. Even today, artisans continue to craft jewelry from the chrysoprase and agate mined here. At the summit of Mount Gassan, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto—the brother of Amaterasu-ōmikami and Susanoo—is enshrined; since the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, it has been believed that Amida Nyorai resides there. 山形では、古来から山岳信仰の出羽三山があり、山形の玉髄と瑪瑙は、月山をはじめとする出羽三山朝日山系の広いエリアで様々な景色を持った石が産出されます。
一般的には、透明なものをカルセドニー(玉髄)と呼び、縞模様があるものをアゲート(瑪瑙)と呼びますが、結晶構造や成分は変わりありません。
清流寒河江川が流れ、磐梯朝日国立公園のある大自然が雄大且つ優雅に包み込む地域です。
今でも産出された玉髄や瑪瑙で職人さんがアクセサリーを制作しています。
月山は山頂に天照大神や素戔嗚の兄弟である月読命(ツクヨミ)が祀られ、神仏習合以降は阿弥陀如来が住まわれているとされています。
