| *What is [Kyonan Stone]? Boshu Stone is well-known among stones extracted from geological strata in Chiba Prefecture; however, Mount Kyonan, where the mine was located, is now off-limits to both mining and quarrying. On the site of the former mine, a 30-meter-tall statue carved into the rock face in 1960—known as the “Hundred-Shaku Kannon”—is enshrined to pray for traffic safety on land, sea, and in the air. Kyonan Stone is quarried from the same geological strata as Boshu Stone and has a similar texture; however, since the strata are slightly younger, it feels softer and has a finer grain than Boshu Stone. It is a premium stone quarried from strata dating back 2 million years to the Pliocene epoch of the Neogene Period. Two million years ago was a time when the ancestors of the mammals we see today thrived, before the onset of the Ice Age. 千葉県の地層から採取されるものとしては房州石が有名で、その鉱山のある鋸山は現在採掘も採取することもできません。
その鉱山跡地には、1960年岩肌に彫られた百尺観音と呼ばれる30mの陸海空の交通安全祈願の仏様が祀られています。
この鋸南石は房州石と同じ地層から採取される石で質感が似ていますが、少し地層が若く房州石よりも柔らかく目が細かく感じます。
200万年前の新生代新第三紀鮮新世の地層から採取される銘石です。
200万年前といえば、現在我々が見る事のできる種類の哺乳類の祖先が繁栄した時期で、その後氷河期に入ります。
