Description
| *What is [Uwamizu-zakura]? Its ancient name is “Hahaka,” which appears in the [Amano-Iwato] myth in the *Kojiki*, and it is used in tortoise-shell divination. The myth of the Cave of the Heavenly Rock states: “[Summoning Amenokoyane-no-Mikoto and Futotama-no-Mikoto, they cut off the shoulder of the male stag of Mount Amakaguyama, took the *hahaka* from Mount Amakaguyama, and had them perform a divination together].” It is said that they extracted the bones of a male deer from Mount Amakaguyama, burned them using the bark of that tree, and used the results to divine good or bad fortune. From the early days of the Nara period onward, there were apparently several shrines designated to offer this tree as a sacred tree for divination rituals; even today, during the Daijōsai (Grand Harvest Festival), a divination ritual is performed to select the Saida (sacred rice fields) for the Yuki-no-Miko and Miko-no-Miko, and the Kamimizo cherry is offered. When Emperor Naruhito ascended the throne, this practice was followed to determine the quality of the rice. In this divination, the cracks that form around the groove—known as “ura-mizo”—were written as [Uwamizu-zakura], and through phonetic corruption, the tree came to be called Uwamizu-zakura.
