| *What is [Jindai-sen]? Strictly speaking, it is known as *Hari-giri*, but as a timber species, it is generally referred to as [Sen-no-ki]. In the Ainu language, it is called [Ayusni], a name derived from [Ay-us-ni], meaning “a tree with many thorns.” The bark is grayish-brown, turning blackish-brown as the tree ages, and develops deep vertical cracks. The wood is generally white in color, with a coarse texture and straight grain that resembles zelkova, giving it a beautiful appearance; for this reason, it is also known as “false zelkova.” The wood has been widely used for construction, furniture, tools, and carvings. In younger sections, the grain remains fairly distinct, while in older sections, it develops a beautiful, deep brown patina. 正確には針桐(ハリギリ)といわれ、木材としては一般的に「センノキ」と呼ばれています。
アイヌ語では「アユシニ(ayusni)」と呼ばれ、これは「アイウシニ(ay-us-ni)」(とげ・多くある・木)という意で名付けられています。
樹皮は灰褐色で、老木になると黒褐色になっていき、深く縦に裂け目が入ります。
全体に色合いが白く、肌目は粗め、木目はまっすぐでケヤキに似て美しいため、別名をニセケヤキと呼ばれています。
材は建築材や家具材、器具、彫刻など幅広く利用されてきました。
年数が浅い部分はその木目が割とはっきり残り、深い部分は綺麗な茶神代になっています。
