| *What is [Kitayama Cedar]? A prized timber species that has been cultivated in northwestern Kyoto City since around the Muromachi period, approximately 600 years ago. Products made from this wood are called [Kitayama Logs (Kitayama Maruta)], and the beauty of the polished wood grain has a unique charm. It is characterized by straight, knot-free logs. It was designated as the official tree of Kyoto Prefecture in Showa 41. It has been used in famous architectural structures such as Rokuon-ji (Kinkaku-ji) and is even mentioned in Yasunari Kawabata’s *The Ancient Capital*. 製品は「北山丸太（きたやままるた）」とよばれ、磨き上げられた丸太の木のはだの美しさは独特の味わいがあります。
節がなく真っ直ぐに伸びた丸太が特徴です。
京都府の木として、昭和41年に制定されました。
鹿苑寺（金閣寺）等の有名建築物にも使用され、川端康成「古都」中でも語られています。
