Description
| *What is the [Kumano Hongu Cedar]? A type of cedar found in Hongu, Hongu-cho, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, where the Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine is located. During the Edo period, Tokugawa Yorinori spearheaded the restoration of the Kumano Sanzan, transforming the area into a place of pilgrimage admired by people from all walks of life. Today, it is one of the component sites of the UNESCO World Heritage Site [Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range]. The “Two Cedar Trees” (Nihon-sugi), designated as a Natural Monument of Hongu Town, are said to have originated when Kobo Daishi, while on a pilgrimage to Kumano, broke a branch from a tree to use as chopsticks during lunch. After his meal, he stuck the branch into the ground, and it grew into the two massive cedar trees that stand there today. The Hongu cedars are said to be inhabited by divine spirits and are used to make the wooden plaques given as sacred gifts. 熊野本宮大社のある、和歌山県田辺市本宮町本宮でとれる木。
江戸時代に、徳川頼宜が熊野三山の復興を手がけ、身分階級関係なく多くの人々の憧れの地となりました。現在はユネスコの世界遺産「紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道」の構成資産の1つです。
その昔、弘法大師が熊野詣での道中に昼食を食べた時、木の枝を折って箸の代わりにし、食後その枝を土に突き立てたものが成長して現在の2本の杉の大木になったと伝えられている二本杉は本宮町の天然記念物です。
本宮杉は神の御霊が宿るといわれ授与品の木札にも使われています。
