Description
Meticulously calculated architectural structures and geometric figures. The world of Escher, the master of "trompe l'oeil" that deceives the eye. 31 masterpieces are included as postcards. What is most fascinating about Escher? the mysterious and philosophical elegance of his works. The source of this elegance is the mathematical structure that lies in the background, mathematical structures lying in the background, or the visual effects of optical illusions. A typical example of works that utilize visual illusions is a trompe l'oeil painting called "impossible three-dimensional painting. The front-back relationship of the pillars is reversed between the floor and the ceiling in [Monomi no Tower] (1958), which returns to the starting point when the viewer continues to ascend. Ascending and Descending" (1960), which uses an infinite staircase as a motif, belongs to this category. He did not just want to incorporate strange and interesting trompe l'oeil pictures, The more one looks at these works, the more one is drawn into them, and the more one thinks about them. Sugiyama Atsuyoshi (Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences, Meiji University) - Excerpt from the Preface
