In 1937, he studied under the Japanese-style painter *Noda Kuura. In 1946, he established the Gekimei Handicraft Institute in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, together with his father *Bin, a novelist, the creator of "sokizome" and a revivalist of hand-dyeing and hand-weaving, and engaged in the production of washi paper. In 1948, he established a herb-dyeing laboratory there. In 1956, the laboratory was moved to Takasaki City. From the 1960s, he held exhibitions such as "Soki-Dyed Hand-Woven Pongee Exhibition" and "Soki-Dyed Weaving Exhibition". Thereafter, he held many solo exhibitions until 2007. In the 1970s, he traveled to India, Mexico, Guatemala, Thailand, and Singapore, as well as Okinawa and other parts of Japan, to study dye plants. In 1986, he discovered green dyeing using young leaves. In 1995, he presented green dyeing at the International Wode Indigo Conference in Toulouse, France. Passed away in 2010 at the age of 86. |

【著者について】
山崎青樹 やまざきせいじゅ
1923 年、東京都渋谷区生まれ。日本画家、染色工芸家。
1937年、日本画家・野田九浦に師事。
1946 年、小説家であり、「草木染」の命名者であり、手染め手織りの復興に努めた父・斌とともに、長野県佐久市に 「月明手工芸指導所」を設立、和紙製造に従事する。
1948 年、同所に草木染研究所を併設。
1956 年、研究所を高崎市に移転。
1960 年代から「草木染手織紬展」や「草木染染織展」などを開催。
その後、2007 年まで個展を多数開催。
1970 年代には、染料植物研究のため、沖縄をはじめとする日本国内のほか、 インド、メキシコ、グァテマラ、タイ、シンガポールへ渡航。
1986 年、若葉による緑染を発見。
1995 年、フランス・トゥールーズで開催された「国際ウオード・インディゴ会議」で緑染を発表。
2010年、86 歳で逝去。
