ポストカードサイズに納められた作品写真を見ると､いっそうその印象を強くする。
彼はたいへんな近眼で､カンヴァス間近に顔を寄せて描いていたといわれるように､全体を見ながら構図を調整したのではなく､細部の描写への没入がつながって全体として仕上がったというべきだろう。
油彩による画面に､素描､写真､版画､染織品､陶器などが「画中画」のように緻密に描きこまれている。
1920年代から最晩年まで繰り返し描いた自画像の身のまわりの品々（愛用の絵筆や喫煙具）､猫の魅力を集約したようなピンと伸びたひげ､ふかふかした毛並みや肉球､乳白色の裸婦や肖像を彩る西洋更紗の布模様やチュール､人物の背景に配された平皿や版画。
