It boasts a history of more than 300 years. It is said that it was first made by Sadanobu Matsudaira, lord of the Shirakawa domain, who encouraged Daruma as an off-season job for farmers in order to promote industry. Although it used to be a thriving industry, today there are only two houses left, the Watanabe and Sagawa families.
