ウレタンスポンジがなかった時代に、食器洗いのスポンジ代わりに、
この荒生地で食器を洗っていた事が生地の目の硬さの由来です。
ニット製品の為、布帛（ふはく）とは異なり、何枚かにたたんで手の中に収めた時の弾力が非常に使いやすく、
布帛と比較しても、吸水量が多く、たくさんの食器を拭くことができ、また生地目も荒いので乾きが早いです。
